Start with a preset, then adjust content sizing, images, and connectors.
Choose any of the six built-in presets, either base layout, or a custom extension. Five presets extend portrait; pill extends landscape with rounded ends, a circular thumbnail and automatic width capped at 360 pixels. Three sample cards compare short and long text, absent subtitles, and missing images. Hover or select cards to see their state styles.
Compare layouts below, then test one layout against all three sample cards. Changing the Layout dropdown keeps your other settings; Reset overrides restores the selected layout's defaults.
Each preview uses the same title, subtitle and image, with that layout's default card styles. Connectors are hidden here. Choose a preview to start with its defaults in the tester, clearing any overrides. Tester settings do not change these previews.
Text padding is independent of block heights and line limits. It adds space to automatic text blocks and sits inside fixed blocks. Empty or hidden automatic blocks stay collapsed.

Automatic width normally follows text and spacing. The image-only preset uses image-based sizing and keeps a light grey placeholder (backgroundColor: '#f0f0f0') for the middle card's missing image. Try automatic width with a fixed height to compare the loaded images' proportions with the placeholder's square fallback. See image-only sizing and caps. Numeric widths ignore maxWidth; fixed card heights clip overflow. Reset keeps the selected layout.
soft-noteThis registers a variation of title-subtitle, inheriting its renderer and changing its default styles. Register it once before creating the timeline, then select soft-note to use it. Built-in layouts are already registered and need none of this setup. See layout inheritance.
These controls update the timeline's shared article.defaultStyle and state styles, so all three cards inherit the same settings. No per-card style loop is needed.
The code first clears whole override blocks with Histropedia.UNSET, then applies only your current choices. Omitting a property from a patch would leave an earlier override in place. Clearing an override reveals the selected layout's defaults; it does not remove the layout definition. Normal, hover and active overrides are separate blocks.
See Article Sizing and clearing overrides for the full sizing and inheritance rules.
